What is Data Communication?

Homepage

Data communication refers to the transfer of data from one device to another via the use of a transmission medium. It could be via wired media, for example twisted pair wire or coaxial cable, or wireless media like radio waves or optical fibers. The data must be encoded, encapsulated, and transmitted by the sending device, and decoded and decapsulated at the receiver device. This process is similar to the transmission of analog signals however, it is more complicated and focuses on the exchange of binary data (1s and 0s).

Companies are making use of data communications to better communicate information to dispersed users. This helps them increase efficiency within their business. For example, an automotive manufacturer needed to communicate information to 6’000 non-trained and dispersed spare parts dealers in order to match demand with stock and decrease waste products. This required communication via a network not optimized for data transfer and the use of a mobile app which was difficult for novice users to navigate.

Effective data communication starts with understanding your audience and how they perceive the data. It is about creating visuals to help tell the story, providing context-based information, and then articulating insights with a clear narrative. It also involves adjusting content to individual audiences depending on their hierarchy, technical expertise and level of interest. It also means pushing the boundaries of creativity to make data communication more impactful and memorable.
